Have you ever applied a label, only to find it peeling off after a few days? Whether you’re labeling packages, products, or personal items, getting the label to stick properly is more complicated than it seems. The secret lies in understanding the adhesives, surfaces, and conditions that affect how well a label adheres. In this article, we’ll break down the different types of label adhesives, the factors that impact their performance, and tips for applying labels for the best results.
Table of Content
Label adhesive is a substance that allows a label to stick to a desired surface. Basically, adhesives are divided into two types: permanent and removable. Permanent labels mean that once the label is applied, it cannot be peeled off easily and can only be removed using an adhesive remover or other methods. Once removed, they cannot be reapplied. On the other hand, removable labels refer to labels that can be peeled off and reapplied easily without compromising their adhesion.
There are three main types of label adhesives: hot melt adhesives, water-based adhesives, and solvent-based adhesives.
Water-based Adhesives
Water-based adhesives are primarily composed of water-soluble acrylic glue. They offer stable adhesion and are less likely to overflow. Several factors affect their stickiness:
Temperature: Optimal adhesion occurs at 20–30°C. Too high or too low temperatures can reduce stickiness.
Humidity: Best used on dry surfaces. Excessive moisture can weaken the bond.
Surface Type: Paper, cardboard, and wood are easy to stick to, while rough surfaces and certain plastics tend to reduce adhesion.
Solvent-based Adhesives (Oil-based)
Solvent-based adhesives use organic solvents as a medium and mainly consist of adhesive agents and solvents. Their advantages include short curing time, good water resistance, and high initial and long-term tackiness.
Hot Melt Adhesives
Hot melt adhesives change their physical state with temperature while maintaining their chemical composition. They typically contain resins, tackifiers, viscosity modifiers, and antioxidants, making them suitable for applications requiring strong initial adhesion and durability.
Several factors can affect how well a label sticks to a surface.
Surface Preparation: The surface should be clean, dry, and free of dust, oil, or other contaminants before applying the label. Dirt or grease can weaken the adhesive bond and reduce durability.
Surface Type: The material and texture of the surface play a critical role. Smooth surfaces like glass or metal generally provide better adhesion, while rough, uneven, or porous surfaces, such as certain plastics or textured wood, can reduce sticking performance.
Adhesive Type: Different adhesives behave differently depending on the surface and environmental conditions. For example, water-based adhesives work best on paper or cardboard, solvent-based adhesives offer stronger initial tack and water resistance, and hot melt adhesives provide high durability on a variety of surfaces.
Temperature: Adhesion can be affected by temperature during application and curing. Extreme heat or cold can weaken the bond, while optimal temperatures improve performance.
Humidity and Moisture: Excessive moisture or very dry conditions can impact adhesive effectiveness. Some adhesives are more sensitive to humidity than others.
Label Storage and Age: Labels that have been stored improperly or are past their shelf life may lose adhesive strength.
By considering these factors, you can ensure better adhesion and longer-lasting label performance.
Applying labels correctly is crucial to ensure strong and long-lasting adhesion. First, always make sure the surface is clean, dry, and free of dust, oil, or other contaminants. Use a soft cloth or alcohol wipe to remove any residue if necessary.
Next, consider the temperature of both the surface and the label. Most adhesives perform best at room temperature (around 20–30°C). Applying labels in very cold or hot conditions can reduce their stickiness.
When applying the label, start from one edge and gradually press it down across the surface to avoid air bubbles and wrinkles. Using a roller or a squeegee can help create uniform pressure and improve adhesion.
For removable labels, press evenly but avoid excessive force, as too much pressure can cause the adhesive to stick permanently. For permanent labels, firm and consistent pressure ensures a strong initial bond.
Finally, allow time for the adhesive to set before exposing the label to moisture, friction, or extreme conditions. Proper application techniques combined with suitable surface preparation and adhesive selection will maximize label performance.
Strong label adhesion depends on choosing the right adhesive, preparing the surface properly, and applying the label carefully. Clean, dry surfaces, suitable temperature and humidity, and even pressure during application all help ensure labels stay secure and last longer. Following these simple steps will keep your labels looking neat and professional.

I use these to print information tags and barcodes/prices for my boutique. The tags allow me to include all information required for customers to understand the item fully, and because the labels are sticker, it allows them to transfer this information into booklets which they keep for referencing. Highly recommend.
I have a Brother QL-800, and these label rolls fit perfectly. The glue sticks well to smooth surfaces, and the printing is clear. I like that each roll has its own mounting plate. I use a lot of labels because I like to stay organized, so these will last me a few months, but I will need more later. If I notice any problems with quality or durability, I will update this review.
Fits easily on all containers.
