Some of our more observant users may have already noticed,we have switched from glossy color labels to matte color labels this year. Do you like the change? If you are a fan of matte color labels, you are probably happy to see it. Some users may be curious about why we made this switch. We’d love to take this opportunity to explain the whole story. Keep reading!

What are Glossy and Matte Color Labels

Glossy color labels feature a smooth, shiny surface that enhances color saturation and gives designs a vibrant, polished look. They are often favored in retail or promotional settings and other settings that need to stress core information.

Matte color labels, on the other hand, have a non-reflective, muted surface. They show a low-profile and elegant tone and are also favored by many users.

Each finish has its merits, but choosing the right one depends on a label’s use case, the printing method, and user feedback. At our company, we’ve always believed in evolving based on real-world performance and customer experience.

2023 to 2024: The Glossy Label Experiment and Feedback

In the summer of 2023, we introduced glossy color labels. Our intention was clear -- to enhance the visual appeal of our products by offering richer color saturation and a more premium, eye-catching finish.

During the initial roll-out, many customers responded positively. In a variety of settings -- such as retail packaging, product branding, and promotional labeling -- glossy labels performed well, drawing attention and adding a vibrant touch.

However, over time, we also began receiving critical feedback from users in specific environments. Some customers experienced issues like slipping during printing or paper jams, especially when using certain thermal printers. After repeated internal testing, we identified the roof cause: the glossy finish reduced adhesion and increased surface slickness. This could lead to print misalignment, smudging, and feeding errors on certain machines.

While these issues were not widespread, we take every piece of feedback seriously -- especially when it affects printing effectively for our customers.

Listening to users: Evaluation After the Issues happened

User feedback has always been at the heart of our product development process. When reports of print inconsistencies and jamming started to surfaces, we didn’t ignore them.

Our factory conducted thorough internal quality checks and followed up with detailed customer case reviews to understand the scope and conditions under which the problems occurred. Through this investigation, we confirmed that the glossy label material showed variable compatibility with certain thermal printers, especially in high-speed or high-temperature environments.

While not all users experienced these problems, we recognized a critical truth: even occasional disruptions in printing can significantly affect productivity, especially for businesses relying on fast and flawless labeling operations.

Rather than dismissing the feedback as isolated cases, we made the decision to adjust our material strategy, which the goal of ensuring a smoother, more consistent experience across a wider range of printer types and use cases.

2025: Why We Returned to Matte – A Reliable, Practical Choice

After careful evaluation and real-world testing, we made the decision in 2025 to transition our color label product line back to a matte finish . This move wasn’t a step backward -- it was a deliberate choice rooted in stability, compatibility, and long-term satisfaction.

Matte are compatible with various printer models, particularly thermal printers. Unlike glossy materials, matte surfaces offer better adhesion, less surface slipperiness, and reduced risk of paper jams or misfeeds.

Another key advantage of matte label is their surface is less slippery than glossy ones, which reduces misalignment issues. This make the fast paced fields like e-Commerce, logistics, warehouses, and inventory control more efficient.

While transitioning back to matte color labels addresses most compatibility concerns, we understand some users may have glossy labels on hand. If you encounter printing issues with glossy labels, we recommend trying the following simple adjustment:

Tip: The glossy label paper is slightly stiffer and has a smooth surface. If the end of the label roll is pressed against the desk, it can cause the printer to slip during printing.

  • 1. Try gently pulling the paper flat where it contacts the desk.
  • 2. Alternatively, use a single-sheet (1-cut) load to avoid the roll pressing against the surface. In short, preventing the paper edge from pressing against the table surface can reduce misfeeds.
