When selling on Amazon, there are two ways to handle shipping: FBM (Fulfillment by Merchant) and FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon). With FBM, sellers manage their own shipping. But handling the fulfillment yourself can be troublesome. You would have to manage your orders while also taking care of the fulfillment process.

That’s where Amazon’s FBA program, launched in 2006, comes in. It allows you to outsource your fulfillment services to Amazon. Amazon will help you deal with the fulfillment as well as large amount of complaints from customers. That’s a big relief!

If you choose to use the FBA program, you must follow Amazon's guidelines, including labeling your products with FBA labels. In this guide, we will cover the most important aspects of FBA labeling, including what an FBA label is, its requirements, how to print FBA labels, and how to correctly apply them.

What Are FBA Labels?

FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon) is a service where sellers send their products to Amazon’s warehouses, and Amazon stores, packs, and ships them to customers. They also handle customer service and returns, which saves sellers time and effort.

As an FBA seller, your job is to send your products to Amazon’s fulfillment center. Each product needs a unique FBA barcode label to prevent confusion with similar items from other sellers.

What Barcodes Does Amazon FBA Require?

  • Each FBA product sent to Amazon's fulfillment center must have an FNSKU (Fulfillment Network Stock Keeping Unit) barcode label. The FNSKU label serves as a unique "ID card" for each product. Amazon uses this identifier to process and track the shipment of the items.

    FBA label requirements include:

    • l A Fulfillment Network Stock Keeping Unit (FNSKU)
    • l The product name
    • l The product condition (eg. New or used)

FNSKU code

Do I still need an FNSKU if I have a UPC code?

Yes, this is a unique requirement of the FBA program and serves a practical purpose. Since there can be multiple sellers in the FBA program selling the same product, another seller might be offering an identical item with the same UPC code. If they are shipped to the Amazon warehouse together, it could cause confusion and disputes. That's why the FNSKU code is necessary for FBA products.

How to Get the FNSKU Code?

Amazon automatically creates an FNSKU label when you add a new product to your catalog. Once the product is entered into Amazon's system, it is assigned a unique FNSKU. You can find the FNSKUs for all your products in the Inventory section of Seller Central.

FNSKU Label and Printer Requirements

Amazon has specific requirements for FNSKU labels. Here are some guidelines for labels, including printer requirements.

  • l Thermal labels: They are the most cost-effective option.
  • l White, non-reflective label paper
  • l Label sizes: There are no standard sizes for FNSKU labels, but they should not be too large. Label sizes between 2" x 2" and 2" x 1" will fit just right.
  • l Barcodes must be printed in black.
  • l Removable adhesive is preferred (so your customers can easily remove the label after delivery, but this is optional).

Betckey offers several labels suitable for FNSKU use. Check them out below!

Printer Requirements:

  • l Thermal printers are best, as your seller tools works best with them. You can also use a laser printer, but never an inkjet printer.
  • l Print resolution of 300 DPI or more.

Note: Periodically clean your printer to keep the printer head and the machine inner part clean. This helps ensure that you print clear labels.

Amazon FBA Labeling Fees

If you choose the FBA program, you’ll need to cover certain basic fees, including fulfillment fees, storage fees, removal order fees, and returns processing fees. Labeling service is one of the additional services Amazon offers. Amazon charges $0.20 per item for labeling.

However, if you have a consistent volume of orders, it’s more cost-effective to label the products yourself rather than outsourcing this task to Amazon, which would add up over time. By printing the labels yourself, you only need to pay for the cost of the labels and a small amount of labor.

How to Print Amazon FBA Labels

This is almost a automatic process, foloow the instructions on the platform and you’ll get there.

1. Log in to your Amazon Seller Central.

2. Click Inventory > FBA Inventory from the menu bar.

3. select products you need to create FNSKU labels.

4. Click Edit on the right of the selected product.

5. In the dropdown menu, click Print item labels.

6. Choose the quantity of labels you need.

7. Select Paper/Sticker Type and choose your preferred format.

8. Once you’re done, click Print Item Labels.

How to Place FNSKU Labels Correctly?

After printing, you need to:

  • Ensure each item has a FNSKU label prepared and applied.
  • Cover the product’s original barcode with the FNSKU label.
  • Apply the label to a smooth surface, avoiding corners, edges, or curved areas of the packaging for best results.

If your product requires additional packaging, such as poly bags or bubble wrap, place the label on the outside to make it easy to be scanned.

Conclusion

In this guide, we covered the basic aspects of Amazon’s FBA labeling requirements, mainly FNSKU labels. However, there are several other types of labels involved in Amazon’s fulfillment process. We’ll cover those in more detail in a future guide.
