The rapid development of e-commerce and logistics has made our lives more convenient, but it has also brought significant challenges, with environmental pollution being one of them. As environmental awareness grows, many people recognize the problems of excessive packaging and plastic waste. However, one item that is widely used but rarely noticed is the label.

You might be surprised to learn about the vast number of labels used daily. For example, during Amazon's 2024 Prime Day, over 200 million items were sold globally by third-party sellers, including those from China. This means at least 200 million shipping or address labels were used, not to mention the additional return labels generated from returns. If you care about the environment, such a massive usage volume is bound to catch your attention.

Honestly, not all label manufacturers focus on this aspect, as it may not be an immediate consumer demand. But Betckey cares because we understand that reducing waste provides greater value to consumers. Therefore, today I want to share Betckey's understanding of eco-friendly labels and the efforts we've made in this regard.

What Do We Mean by Eco-Friendly?

When talking about being eco-friendly, what comes to your mind first? Zero pollution? 100% recycling products? Such concepts are indeed attractive to environmentalists, but in reality, achieving zero waste is not feasible at the moment. For example, we all know plastic bags are not eco-friendly, but we still can't do without them. However, using a plastic bag multiple times is also a contribution to the environment.

This aligns with Betckey's philosophy. We don't pursue to produce absolute eco-friendly labels, at least not currently. That would be very challenging, especially since materials like polyethylene and polypropylene, which are used for water-resistant and fade-resistant labels, don't have more eco-friendly alternatives yet. What we aim for is a more practical and easier-to-implement goal—reducing waste in production and achieving a win-win for economic, user, and environmental benefits.

Betckey’s Eco-Friendly Design

Glue-Free Design

Betckey refuses to follow the conventional approach of most manufacturers. We've developed a unique glue-free design for our labels, using rotary force to make the last label adhere to the roll without hot-melt adhesive. Every roll can use up the last label. Saving one label per roll might seem insignificant, but saving one label per 100 rolls saves 100 labels, and saving one label per 1000 rolls saves 1000 labels. Given that Betckey sells millions of rolls annually, the savings are significant. This design not only solves the waste problem but also maximizes label usage, which is a welcome benefit for users.

Let's look at other brands. Most label manufacturers, including mainstream ones like Brother and Dymo, use hot-melt adhesive to bond the roll to the label. This method can cause jams, making the last label unusable and creating waste. Moreover, the extra layer of hot-melt adhesive significantly increases the difficulty of recycling the labels. Thanks to them not developing such products, Betckey has had the opportunity to stand out.

Reusable Cartridges for Brother DK Rolls

One major difference between Brother labels and other brands is that Brother labels require a cartridge. Users of Brother OEM DK Rolls know that the cartridges can't be purchased separately and must be bought with the labels, and they are not reusable. This means every time a roll is used up, the old cartridge is discarded, leading to unnecessary waste and higher costs.

Betckey's founder, an entrepreneur with experience in e-commerce, understands the pain points of small and medium-sized businesses. We all want the best products at reasonable prices. Thus, Betckey's reusable label cartridges were created, providing consumers with more options. Our labels can be purchased separately, with cartridges, or with a choice of the needed number of cartridges. This variety offers greater flexibility.

Focus on Direct Thermal Labels

There are several ways to print labels, with inkjet, thermal transfer, and direct thermal printing being the main methods. Inkjet printing requires ink, thermal transfer printing requires toner, and direct thermal printing does not need additional materials, using heat to activate the thermal coating on the labels. If you visit our website, you will see that most of our labels (except for sticker paper) are designed for direct thermal printers. This specialization not only enhances label quality but also reduces the use of consumables, thereby reducing pollution and waste.

FSC Certification: Responsible Use of Paper

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting responsible forest management. FSC certification indicates that a company's products come from responsibly managed forests and meet environmental, social, and economic standards, making them more trustworthy and preferred by consumers.

Betckey has obtained FSC certification, providing a strong endorsement for our products beyond the products themselves. You can see from our Amazon store that two of our products Dymo 1744907 and DK 2205 has been tagged with the certificate. In the future, we will continue to provide reliable and eco-friendly labels for users!

Conclusion

We all wish to create a pollution-free society. However, it is not easy due to technological limitations. And the demand for durable labels, which require plastic materials like polyethylene and polypropylene, remains huge. Someday, perhaps, scientists will develop more eco-friendly materials. But who knows. For now, all we can do is to produce more eco-friendly products with existing resources, and that's what we have been doing and will continue to do.
