Do you know why Dymo 5XL, 550, and 550 turbo are  so cheap? Dymo LabelWriter 5XL sells for $175,  550 sells for $ 99.9, 550 turbo sells for $ 178.64,  while previous models in the Dymo series are priced higher—for example, the 4XL is currently priced at $268. This isn’t due to any recent promotions. In fact, the initial release price for the 5XL was $199, lower than other Dymo printers on sale. So why is this newly released printer cheaper than the older models? It doesn’t quite make sense, right?

The answer lies in today’s question: Why You Shouldn’t Buy the Dymo LabelWriter 5XL. Dymo has added an RFID chip to the Dymo LabelWriter 5XL, making users to use only Dymo labels. Since Dymo labels are significantly more expensive than third-party compatible labels, they are likely to cover the profit loss from the lower printer price soon. I’ll explain this in detail next.

Dymo 5XL, 550 and 550 Turbo No Longer Be Able to Print Compatible Labels

DYMO has recently made a significant decision. They has integrated proprietary technology in the 550 series printers that will not allow for the use of 3rd party labels at this time.

This means users cannot use third-party labels or even older Dymo labels produced before April 2020, which lack RFID chips.

This is double proprietary. The first proprietary is their design with the notches that uses a sensor to recognize the distance between the label with that notch and you would have to have these notched labels.

When you unrolled the Dymo brand labels, you can found the second proprietary. They added an RFID or NFC chip on their cardboard rolls, which the printer itself has to sense in order to allow the to operate. Dymo 5XL, 550 and 550 Turbo are all designed like this. So the 550 series printers will not print without this.

Sadly, DYMO authentic labels are oftentimes more costly than Betckey Labels . This make the use of the 550 series printers prohibitively expensive.

When you put the RFID core into the printer. The RFID does two things. It allows the printer to know what labels are in there. It's like a communication between the printer and the label. So when you put it in it automatically recognizes the the size, type, and it tells you how many labels you have left. So my RFID says these are 4x6 labels and it has 33 labels on the roll.

So Dymo software can read that RFID, count down every time it prints until it hits zero and basically render that RFID useless render the printer inoperable until you put in another roll of labels with an RFID.

As a consumer, who really cares about how many labels you have left? Because, when the labels run out, you just put have another roll of them in the printer. It no matters on a consumer standpoint to know how many labels that you have remaining. Dymo just going to monopolize the use of their expensive brand labels in the printer.

Even older Dymo branded 450 labels will not work with the 550 series printers. They does not support custom printed printer compatible labels, either. That means, only Dymo 550 branded labels will work in your Dymo 550. They do not work with generic or compatible labels like the 450 series did. In the long term, it would be expensive. If you can, find a 450, 450 Turbo and 4XL printer.

Tradeoffs For Users

Dymo uses low price to attract you to buy Dymo 5X. But once you buy it, you are locked to use brand Dymo Labels only, which are significantly more expensive than third-party options. This restriction will undoubtedly increase long-term costs. Therefore, we don’t recommend buying the Dymo 5XL if you're considering it simply because it seems like a real bargain.

According to user reviews, most complaints about the Dymo 5XL focus on its incompatibility with third-party labels. Those who are satisfied with the 5XL typically knew and accepted this limitation before purchasing.

Please note that Betckey’s Dymo-compatible labels are also not compatible with the Dymo 5XL. We clearly mention this in our product details, and we also include a notice with each shipment to inform users that our labels are not suitable for the 5XL.

Don't Buy Dymo 5XL, 550 and 550 Turbo If you Want To Save Money

In fact, the print quality of the Dymo 5XL is the same as the previous generation 4XL. The main update in the 5XL is the addition of RFID chips. Therefore, if you’re considering replace your old Dymo label printer or buying a new one, we recommend choosing models other than the Dymo 5XL, 550, or 550 Turbo, as these alternatives offer a better value for long term use.
